What is Topical Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is an over-the-counter, topical product that's been approved by the FDA to treat hair loss and help regrow hair. Minoxidil is used to treat thinning hair and balding on the scalp.

How Does Minoxidil Work?

Minoxidil actively promotes hair growth by reactivating dormant follicles. Minoxidil, the active ingredient, relaxes blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow to your scalp and hair follicles.

How to Apply Minoxidil

Drop one mL directly on the affected area twice per day and let it dry. While wet, keep hair away from pillows, hats, etc. Do not apply more minoxidil than instructed, as this can cause serious side effects.

Provent Hair Loss Treatment

The 5% formulation of minoxidil (aka minoxidil 5) is a safe and effective hair regrowth treatment for men. In clinical studies, men using minoxidil 5 experienced 45% more hair regrowth than minoxidil 2. More hair, more better.

Minoxidil Side Effects

Minoxidil topical solution is generally safe to use, but some men experience scalp irritation after applying Minoxidil. If this is bothersome, consult your healthcare provider. However, if you use too much minoxidil, you may experience serious side effects, such as chest pain, faintness, unexplained weight gain, dizziness, headaches and irregular or rapid heartbeat. Seek emergency health care if you experience serious side effects.

What causes hair loss in men?

Male pattern baldness, or androgenic alopecia, is the most common form of hair loss and it is typically an inherited condition. As the condition progresses the natural hair growth cycle weakens and your hair follicles shrink, causing your hair to become shorter and finer. The exact cause for this type of hair loss is unknown, but it is related to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) production. Treatments that inhibit the production of DHT are sometimes effective in slowing, stopping, or reversing hair loss due to androgenic alopecia.

Does minoxidil work?

Minoxidil is proven to effectively treat hair thinning and balding. Specifically, minoxidil has been shown to increase hair count on the scalp after 3-4 months of use, and in post-marketing studies, 94% of men rate the treatment as effective to some degree. Minoxidil is only for hair regrowth on the top of the scalp and is not intended for other hair loss like a receding hairline.

How long does it take for minoxidil to work?

Minoxidil typically takes at least 3-4 months of twice-daily use to start seeing the effects. It is important to be consistent about applying minoxidil and to be patient while waiting to see results. Minoxidil’s lengthy timeline is due to the length of the hair growth cycle, which also takes months. It is also important to continue to use minoxidil even after you see results. Minoxidil’s effects will begin to disappear if you stop using the medication.

Are minoxidil and Rogaine the same thing?

Yes, Rogaine® is the brand name version of minoxidil. Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Rogaine, so you can get all of the hair regrowth minus the cost by using generic minoxidil. Both generic minoxidil and brand-name Rogaine are topical treatments and are available as either a solution or a foam.

Can you use minoxidil and finasteride together?

Yes, minoxidil and finasteride can be used together and be more effective when used together than individually. Finasteride works by preventing the breakdown of testosterone into DHT, while minoxidil works as a vasodilator to stimulate blood flow to the scalp and generate increased hair growth. Combined, the two treatments can pack a one-two punch. You can get both finasteride and minoxidil, plus biotin and other hair health products, in our PULSE LIVING if prescribed by a healthcare provider after an online consultation through our application.
