Semen Analysis (Sperm Count Test) in Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Thailand

A semen analysis tests the sperm quality of your semen. In Thailand, a semen analysis or sperm count test measures how much and how well a man's sperm and semen work.

Women are often at the centre of infertility difficulties. However, men make up 30–50% of infertile couples, and sperm is frequently to blame for male infertility. So, the first thing to do when there is a problem with sperm is to have a sperm analysis done.

A low sperm count can signify problems such as infection, varicocele, diabetes, inflammatory disease, male sex hormone imbalance, duct problems, and toxic substance exposure. Learn more about Oligospermia (An Issue About Low SpermCount)

Excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and obesity are all associated with sperm count deficiencies. In addition, a testicular abnormality, a duct problem, or testosterone and hormonal imbalance can all result in no sperm (azoospermia).

The Analysis of the Semen Includes the Following to Determine Your Sperm Health:

  1. Morphology (Sperm shape)
  2. pH
  3. Sperm Motility (Movement)
  4. Sperm Concentration
  5. Leukocyte (White blood cell)
  6. Count Viability Volume

Semen Analysis can help determine if a man has any fertility issues and can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for infertility in men.

How is the Sample Collected for Semen Analysis?

Semen analysis, which is sometimes called a "sperm count test," is more accurate when done on a sample that was taken 2–5 days after the last time the man had sex or ejaculated. The sample can be collected in our clinic or at home (if it arrives within one to two hours of production).

Steps for Collection of Sample:

  1. Use soap and water to wash your hands.
  2. Do not use lubricant, saliva, or anything else that might have spermicidal agents in it.
  3. Put your pee right into the clean sample cup.
  4. Try to catch the first part of the ejaculate, but do not try to get any of the semen that has fallen out.
  5. As soon as you are done, put the lid on the container.

Who Should Go for Semen Analysis?

Semen analysis is usually suggested for men who have trouble getting pregnant or want to start a family.

The sperm test is used to determine if a man has any issues that may affect his ability to conceive and can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for infertility.

Semen analysis can also be used to monitor men undergoing assisted reproduction procedures. If couples try to conceive for a year, determine if the sperm is healthy.

Also, men considering a vasectomy or who have had a vasectomy in the past may undergo semen analysis to ensure the procedure is successful.

What are Some of the Factors That Will Affect Sperm Quantity and Quality?

Men with a history of testicular injury, infection, or surgery, or a known genetic condition affecting fertility may also benefit from a semen analysis.

Problems with sexual function, such as;

  • Low sex drive
  • Trouble maintaining an erection (erectile dysfunction
  • Pain, swelling or a lump in the testicle area
  • Decreased facial or body hair or other signs of a chromosome or hormone abnormality

Infections that impact your sperm health:

What Are Some of the Factors That Will Impact Your Sperm Health & Fertility?

Some of the common factor that will affect your sperm health are morphology (sperm shape), pH, sperm motility (movement), sperm concentration, leukocytes (white blood cells), and countability volume.

How Does Morphology (Sperm Shape) Affect Fertility?

Sperm shape, or morphology, is one of the factors evaluated during a semen analysis.

Abnormal sperm morphologies, such as a malformed head or a bent or coiled tail, can interfere with the sperm's ability to fertilise an egg and contribute to fertility problems.

How Does Sperm pH Affect Fertility?

Sperm pH is the measure of alkalinity or acidity in semen. The normal pH range for semen is between 7.2 and 7.8. A pH level outside this range can indicate a problem with the semen.

A pH level that is too high or too low can affect sperm function and potentially lower the chances of fertilisation. A high pH level can signify an infection, while a low pH level can mean that the tubes that carry sperm are blocked.

How Does Sperm Motility (Movement) Affect Fertility?

Sperm movement, or motility, is one of the factors evaluated during a semen analysis. It refers to the ability of sperm to move toward an egg to fertilise it.

Sperm movement is commonly classified into four categories:

  • Progressive motility: sperm that move in a straight line or large circles
  • Non-progressive motility: sperm that move but do not move in a straight line or large circles.
  • Immotile: sperm that do not move at all.

A high number of sperm with good movement is considered a good indicator of fertility.

How Does Sperm Concentration Affect Fertility?

Sperm volume is a way to measure how much sperm is made when a man ejaculates.

The average sperm volume is 2 mL or more per ejaculate. Therefore, low sperm volume can be an indication of a fertility issue.

Sperm count is the number of sperm present in a man's semen. A low sperm count, also known as oligospermia, can affect a man's ability fertility. This is because a low sperm count can make it harder for sperm to fertilise an egg and can lower the chances of achieving pregnancy.

Numerous factors, including genetic conditions, infections, hormonal imbalances, and certain medications, can cause a low sperm count.

Hypogonadism (low testosterone) happens when a man's testosterone levels fall below normal. It can directly affect fertility by lowering sperm production and indirectly by reducing sex drive and causing erectile dysfunction

How Does Sperm Leukocyte (White blood cell) Count Affect Fertility?

The presence of white blood cells (leukocytes) in semen is known as leukocytospermia. A typical semen sample should have less than 1 million white blood cells per millilitre of semen. Elevated levels of white blood cells in the semen can indicate an infection or inflammation of the reproductive tract.

How Does Sperm Viability Affect Fertility?

Sperm viability refers to the percentage of sperm alive and capable of fertilising an egg. A typical sperm sample should have at least 58% of the sperm that are alive. Low sperm viability can indicate poor sperm health and can affect a man's fertility.

How Does Sperm Volume Affect Fertility?

The more volume there is, the more likely the female reproductive tract will be filled with sperm. Fluids from the seminal vesicles, testes, bulbourethral, and prostate glands make up sperm.

Low semen volume can be caused by a blocked or missing seminal vesicle, backward ejaculation, blocked vas deferens, stress, or an imbalance in hormones. On the other hand, inflammation of the reproductive glands can cause the volume to be too high.

How Can I Improve My Sperm Count and Quality?

Healthy living can boost your fertility.

5 aspects can increase your sperm count and quality.

1. Boosting Your Sex Hormones Levels

Sex hormones, such as testosterone, can be increased by reducing stress, losing weight, building muscle mass, and getting a good night's rest. (Learn more about Testosterone Replacement Therapy in Thailand

2. Lifestyle Change & Diet

Reducing your alcohol consumption and stopping smoking will help improve your sperm quality. Including food with high antioxidants, zinc, and selenium will help too. Minimise food that is high in phytoestrogens, like soya beans. Try to avoid and reduce the intake of processed foods.

3. Get Tested for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Some common STDs like gonorrhoea and chlamydia, can be asymptomatic (do not display symptoms), and the long-term complications can cause scarring of the reproductive tract and infertility. Getting an STD Test can help determine those STDs.

4. Medication

Some medications, such as testosterone replacement, rheumatic drugs, steroids, and prostate medication will impair your sperm count.

5. Heat

Avoid tight-fitting jeans, pants, or underwear, as they can affect your sperm count.
