HIV Treatment at PULSE Clinic and Pharmacy: Where to Find HIV Treatment in Thailand

HIV treatment, called antiretroviral therapy (ART), uses prescribed medications to lower the HIV virus to undetectable levels, making it untraceable by standard tests. With this type of treatment, ART helped people living with HIV start a family and enjoy a happy, healthy life.

Starting ART is crucial for everyone with HIV, regardless of how long they've had the virus or their health status. Delaying treatment can damage the immune system and increase the risk of transmission, illness, and AIDS. Book an appointment with PULSE Clinic today to begin your ART journey!

How to Start Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) at PULSE Clinic

If You Already Have HIV Positive Test Results:

  1. Make an appointment with PULSE Clinic.
  2. Bring your test results to your visit. Our doctor will evaluate if you need another test to confirm the HIV infection, which may require blood samples.
  3. Once HIV is confirmed, additional tests may be needed to determine the most appropriate treatment for you.

If You Haven’t Had Any STD Tests Before:

  1. Make an appointment with PULSE Clinic.
  2. Our doctor will discuss your risk factors and sexual history. This helps in evaluating your risks and ordering the appropriate tests.
  3. If the test results are negative, our doctor may suggest starting PrEP to reduce future infection risks. When taken as prescribed, PrEP reduces the risk of HIV infection by 99%.
  4. If the test results are positive, further tests may be required. HIV medication is not a one-size-fits-all solution, so your doctor will assess the best medication for you.

After Your HIV Diagnosis:

  1. Take your medication daily and on time.
  2. Come back for a follow-up and to refill your medication as scheduled by our staff.

Transferring your treatment to PULSE Clinic

Whether you're a frequent traveler to Thailand, new to the country, or a local resident who values privacy and quality care, PULSE Clinic is here for you! Transferring your treatment to us is easy—just follow these simple steps!

  1. Book your appointment.
  2. Bring your medical records with you to your appointment
  3. Have a consultation with one of our doctors

Here is what you should prepare before your appointment:

  • If you're coming from another hospital, please bring all your medical records. Most hospitals provide these for free.
  • When you visit PULSE Clinic, show your records to your doctor. They will review your information and continue your treatment plan.
  • As per national guidelines for HIV treatment and prevention, follow-ups will occur every six months. During these visits, we’ll check your HIV viral load, CD4 count, fasting lipid profile, liver and kidney function, complete blood count, and perform a urinalysis.

At PULSE Clinic, we prioritized quality and holistic care for your condition. We will take care of your 6 to 12 months of medications.

A referral letter and medical records can help your transfer go more smoothly, as our doctor will be familiar with your current history and know what to do next.

Emergency HIV Medication Refills

We understand that people living with HIV need to take their medication exactly as prescribed to stay healthy and maintain an undetectable viral load. We can provide emergency refills for your medication if needed. In case of an emergency, contact us about your situation and present your prescription. Antiretroviral Therapy (ART): The Key to Achieving an Undetectable HIV Viral Load

What to Expect During Doctor Visits for Antiretroviral Therapy (HIV Treatment)

Some people might be afraid of going to the doctor or nervous about HIV-related visits, but these visits are really simple, just like any other doctor's appointment!

  • During your visits, the doctor will ask questions and perform routine exams to assess how HIV is affecting your body.
  • They may discuss sexual or injection partners and ways to prevent HIV transmission.
  • Blood samples will be taken to check your viral load. This can indicate any changes in your body and help determine if your treatment is working properly.
  • Tests may include screenings for other infections or health issues, and immunizations may be offered.
  • HIV medication will be discussed, prescribed, and monitored. The doctor will work with you to find the treatment that works best for you.
  • Blood tests will be used to monitor HIV and guide treatment decisions while you’re on ART.

Here Is What You Should Know About Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)

  • There's no cure for HIV/AIDS, and the body can't eliminate the virus once infected.
  • Antiretroviral therapy (ART) can control HIV and prevent complications.
  • Everyone diagnosed with HIV should take ART, regardless of the disease stage or complications.
  • People with an undetectable viral load must continue taking their medicine.
  • ART typically involves a combination of two or more medicines from different classes to reduce HIV in the blood.
  • Many ART options combine multiple HIV medicines into a single daily pill.

HIV is not the End.

Though there are currently no cure for HIV, undetectable viral load is easily achievable. Having an undetectable viral load does not cure HIV, as the virus remains in the body. However, effective treatment at PULSE can help you achieve a normal life expectancy while preventing the transmission of the virus to others. With the right care, you can also start a family and enjoy a happy, healthy life. More reason to trust PULSE to support your journey toward better health and wellness.

What is U=U?

You might have heard the phrase 'Undetectable = Untransmittable'. Most people living with HIV who follow a daily antiretroviral therapy regimen can achieve an undetectable viral load within six months.

When someone with HIV is undetectable and maintains this status for at least six months, the risk of sexual transmission is effectively zero. This is estimated to be 100% effective as long as they continue taking their prescribed medication. At PULSE Clinic, we perform regular blood tests to monitor your progress and determine when your virus is undetectable and untransmittable.

How Often Do You Take HIV Medication?

People newly diagnosed with HIV typically take between 1 and 4 pills daily. The specific combination of HIV medicines is tailored to each individual.

Treatment effectiveness is monitored by measuring the viral load; an undetectable viral load means the virus cannot be measured. Most people on daily HIV treatment achieve an undetectable viral load within 6 months.

What Happens If You Stop Taking HIV Medication?

If you stop taking your HIV medication, your viral load will quickly increase. It’s important to continue taking your HIV medicine as prescribed, even if your viral load is undetectable.

If you’re considering stopping your medication or have concerns about your treatment, consult your doctor. If you’ve already stopped, reach out to your health care provider immediately. They can help address any issues that led to discontinuation and assist you in resuming your medication regimen.

Are There Any Side Effects from HIV Medications?

While on HIV medication, you might experience symptoms such as:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Fatigue

We know that side effects like nausea or diarrhea can make it challenging to stick with HIV treatment. Your healthcare provider can offer medications or other support to help manage most side effects.

If your HIV treatment is causing significant discomfort, discuss it with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional medications to alleviate the side effects or adjust your treatment plan.
