What is HIV Infection?

HIV is primarily transmitted through semen and blood-to-blood contact with someone who has a high viral load.

High-risk activities include:

- Having unprotected sex (barebacking)
- Engaging in prolonged sessions (which can damage the lining of the anus or vagina)
- Having sex without lubricant (increasing the risk of injury to the anus)
- Sharing injection equipment (though this risk is low in Bangkok)

Contrary to what you might think, HIV is harder to transmit than it seems, and four conditions must be met for transmission to occur:

1. Exist – One of the individuals involved must be HIV-positive.
2. Enough – There must be a significant amount of the virus present (i.e., the person is not on treatment).
3. Exit – The virus needs to leave the infected person's body (through cuts, blood, precum, semen, or anal mucous).
4. Entry – It must enter the bloodstream of the uninfected person (through unprotected sex, cuts, or abrasions).

If any one of these four factors is missing, transmission of HIV is not possible.

Test Often. Anonymous HIV Testing.

Anonymous HIV testing allows you to get tested for HIV without providing your name, NRIC number, or contact information. No personal data is recorded, including positive test results, and this information will not be reported to the government. You'll need to complete a form and an anonymous questionnaire to provide some details about yourself, but all information will be kept strictly confidential. During registration, you may be asked for your email address so that your test results can be sent to you; however, if you prefer to receive your results verbally, that option is also available.

HIV Treatment

HIV treatment has made significant advancements, with breakthroughs emerging each year.

Typically, medication involves taking just one pill daily, which combines three different antiretroviral drugs that work together to manage the virus.

It's important to see a doctor for regular check-ups every six months to ensure everything is on track. Today, most people living with HIV experience no short- or long-term side effects from their treatment.

A newly diagnosed individual can often begin treatment right away, even during their first visit to PULSE Clinic. This treatment usually suppresses their viral load (the amount of virus in the body) to undetectable levels (UVL), allowing them to live a long and healthy life with a very low risk of transmitting the virus to others. Early treatment is strongly recommended, as the START study has demonstrated that initiating treatment sooner leads to better long-term health outcomes.

Know Your Status

The more you fuck, the more you need to test. For us sexually adventurous guys it’s best to test every three months for HIV, a small sample of blood is taken and the doctor or nurse will probably do a syphilis test at the same time.

In Asia, some clinics, including PULSE Clinic Bangkok, Phuket, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur offer a rapid finger prick test as well, the results of these are delivered back to you within 20 minutes. This test has high sensitivity, high specificity, and high accuracy. DO IT NOW!!!
