Why Test HIV with other STDs?

Doctors often suggest testing for HIV along with other STDs, particularly syphilis. Certain STDs can lead to sores or blisters in areas exposed to sexual activity, increasing the risk of HIV transmission. Being aware of your STD status helps ensure proper treatment and better evaluation of your HIV risk.

Why Get an STD Test?

Getting tested for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis is essential for early detection, effective treatment, preventing transmission, and maintaining overall health. Regular testing is particularly important in areas with rising syphilis cases, like Thailand, and for those with higher-risk behaviors. It provides peace of mind and access to support if needed.

Some sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can remain dormant in the body for years without causing symptoms. Doctors call these infections dormant, meaning they can’t be diagnosed solely by symptoms. If an untested person unknowingly transmits a dormant STI to a partner, they could spread HIV, herpes, hepatitis C, chlamydia, syphilis, or HPV.

Many public health organizations, including CDC, recommends that sexually active adults with new or multiple partners get tested for most STIs at least once a year.

When to Get an STD Test?

The window period in STI testing is the time between infection and the test’s ability to detect the infection accurately. During this period, the body may not produce enough antibodies or markers that tests detect, even though the virus is present and transmissible. It is important that you give your doctor accurate information about your sexual history for the proper tests and to get the most accurate test results.

Who Should Get Tested for STD?

  • Everyone aged 13–64 should get tested for HIV at least once.
  • Women under 25 should test for gonorrhea and chlamydia yearly.
  • Gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men should test yearly for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. Those with multiple partners should test every 3–6 months.
  • People with risky sexual behavior or who share drug equipment should test for HIV at least once a year.
  • Talk to a doctor about testing for throat and rectal STDs if you’ve had oral or anal sex.

How to Reduce the Risk of STDs

Advancements in medicine and a deeper understanding of STDs have provided several ways to lower the risk of transmission. Combining multiple methods can offer even greater protection.

  • Take PrEP – This highly effective HIV prevention method can reduce the risk of HIV transmission by 99% when used correctly.
  • Use condoms or dental dams – Condoms and dental dams are proven to be effective in protecting STDs whether it’s HIV or bacterial infections.
  • Consider DoxyPEP – This new prevention approach involves taking antibiotics after sex to reduce the risk of bacterial STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis by about two-thirds.
  • Get tested regularly – Routine testing helps ensure your prevention methods are effective. Early detection allows for prompt treatment, reducing complications and preventing further spread.
