What is TAFICITA?

TAFICITA® is a prescription medication used to treat HIV infection. It contains two active ingredients:

• Tenofovir Alafenamide (25 mg)
• Emtricitabine (200 mg)

How TAFICITA Works (Mechanism of Action)

TAFICITA® works by blocking reverse transcriptase, an enzyme HIV uses to replicate. By stopping this enzyme, the medication helps control the infection and reduces the viral load, allowing the immune system to function better.

Indications & Approved Uses

Primary Use

• Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents.

Other Approved Uses

• HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP):
  The drug combination in TAFICITA® (similar to Descovy®) is approved by the FDA for use as PrEP to prevent HIV in high-risk individuals.
• Hepatitis B Virus (HBV):
  Tenofovir Alafenamide alone (brand name: Vemlidy®) is FDA-approved for managing chronic hepatitis B infection.

TAFICITA Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and manageable, but it’s important to monitor your health. Common side effects include:

• Nausea
• Dizziness
• Headaches
• Fatigue

Drug Interactions: What to Avoid

TAFICITA® can interact with several other medications, reducing effectiveness or increasing side effects.

Do Not Combine With:

Other HIV medications contain:

• Tenofovir alafenamide
• Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate
• Lamivudine
• Adefovir dipivoxil

Antibiotics like:

• Rifampin, rifabutin, rifapentine
• Seizure medications (anticonvulsants)
• Herbal supplements (e.g., St. John’s Wort)

Important: Always inform your doctor of all medications, supplements, or herbal products you’re taking.

TAFICITA and Pregnancy

• Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
• Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment due to the potential risk of transmitting HIV.
