What is Gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. This bacterium infects the mucous membranes of the reproductive tract, affecting the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women, as well as the urethra in both men and women. Additionally, N. gonorrhoeae can infect the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, eyes, and rectum.

The bacteria can also be present in the discharge from the penis or vagina. Gonorrhea is transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Improperly cleaned sex toys or vibrators can also contribute to the spread of the infection.

How is it Spread?

Gonorrhea is transmitted through sexual contact with an infected partner's penis, vagina, mouth, or anus. Ejaculation is not necessary for the infection to spread. Additionally, gonorrhea can be passed from mother to baby during childbirth.

Individuals who have been treated for gonorrhea can be reinfected if they engage in sexual contact with someone who is infected.

Can gonorrhea clear up on its own?

While the symptoms of gonorrhea may appear intermittently, the infection itself will not resolve without treatment. If left untreated, gonorrhea can cause serious health complications, making it essential to seek medical care. The standard treatment for gonorrhea involves a single injection of ceftriaxone, an antibiotic, administered into the muscle.

Risk Factors

Women under 25 who are sexually active and men who engage in sex with men are at a higher risk of contracting gonorrhea.

Additional factors that may elevate your risk include:

  • Engaging with a new sexual partner.
  • Being with a partner who has multiple sexual partners.
  • Having multiple sexual partners.
  • A history of gonorrhea or other sexually transmitted infections.

Can I test myself for gonorrhea at home?

An at-home gonorrhea test may be helpful for individuals who want to know if they have gonorrhea, especially when in-person testing is not available or convenient. However, home testing is not recommended for people with symptoms and should not be used as a substitute for seeing a physician.

Who should be tested for gonorrhea?

Any sexually active person can contract gonorrhea, and those with genital symptoms like discharge or burning during urination should stop having sex and seek medical attention immediately. Individuals who have had sexual contact with a partner recently diagnosed with an STD should also consult a healthcare provider. Sexually active individuals should discuss their risk factors and consider testing, especially women under 25 or those with risk factors. Additionally, those diagnosed with gonorrhea should be tested for other STDs.

What happens if my test comes back positive?

First and foremost, there’s no need to worry. We’re here to help you, and one of our skilled clinicians will guide you through your treatment options during your appointment.

During your visit, we’ll discuss how you’d prefer to inform your sexual partners about the potential risk. This is a crucial step to prevent further transmission of STIs and ensure they receive the necessary treatment. We handle this process with the utmost care, and we can assist you in notifying your partners without revealing your identity. For more information on partner notification and the support we offer, feel free to contact us.
