What are the benefits and potential side effects of cryotherapy?

The benefits of this treatment are its quick preparation time, on-the-spot application, minimally invasive nature, minimal to no bleeding, low risk of infection, limited wound care, little to no need for injectable anesthesia, and no sutures required.

Possible side effects include blistering and hypopigmentation, though scarring is rare.

Most skin lesions can be addressed in a single session, though some may need 2 or 3 treatments.

How does cryotherapy work?

Liquid nitrogen is the most effective cryogen for clinical applications.

It operates by reaching extremely low sub-zero temperatures, which leads to the destruction of lesions. The extent of damage is influenced by the cooling rate and the minimum temperature reached. Inflammation occurs within 24 hours post-treatment, further aiding in lesion destruction through immune-mediated processes.

The amount of liquid nitrogen used and the delivery method are determined by the size, tissue type, and depth of the lesion, as well as its location on the body and the necessary freezing depth.

How long does each treatment session last?

Each treatment session is straightforward and quick, typically lasting 15 to 30 minutes.

How long does it take for the skin to heal?

After each treatment session, the lesions typically take about one week to dry up and fall off, and the skin usually requires an additional week to fully dry and heal.

What precautions should be taken?

After each treatment session, apply the prescribed antibiotic cream. Clean the area gently, avoiding scratching, rubbing, or irritating it.

As the skin heals and a scab forms, refrain from scratching or peeling it. Allow the scab to come off naturally or until the underlying skin is healed and dry.

What is the cost of cryotherapy?

  • The cost of each cryotherapy session starts at 3,000 THB (DF 1,200 THB + 1-3 lesions)
  • 1 – 3 sessions may be required to ensure complete removal of lesions.
  • Additional topical and/or oral medications may be prescribed to supplement the treatment or for wound care.
  • HPV vaccination will be encouraged for those who have not been vaccinated.

Can HPV infection be prevented?

Condoms don't guarantee protection from infection. This is because HPV can be transmitted by skin contact with areas not covered by condoms.

One of the best ways to protect yourself from HPV infection is to get the vaccine. The vaccine protects against 4 types of HPV (types 6, 11, 16 and 18) that can cause cancer and genital warts.

When to start?

As soon as possible. In October 2016 ACIP recommended HPV dosage according to age starting the first dose.
  • Age less than 15 years old: 2-dose regimen (day 1 and month 6)
  • Age above 15 years old: 3-dose regimen (day 1, month 1-2, month 6)
  • Immunocompromised people such as HIV-infected patients: 3-dose regimen (day 1, month 1-2, month 6) regardless of age

Gardasil 9

9v = nonavalent HPV vaccine (Gardasil®9, HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58)
9v HPV vaccine (9vHPV, Gardasil®9, Merck&Co.) has been licensed by the USFDA to be used among males and females since December 2014. in February 2015, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) recommended that Gardasil®9 used for cancer prevention among males and females. It is widely used for prevention in developed countries.

Where Can I Get an HPV Vaccine in Thailand?

As you may have known, there are many types of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), and some of them, such as type 6, 11, 16, and 18, are the leading cause of cervical cancer in women as well as anal cancer in men. More than 9 of every 10 cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV. HPV doesn’t only affect women. Nearly 4 out of every 10 cases of cancer caused by HPV occur among men. Every year in the U.S., over 13,000 men get cancers caused by HPV. These cancers can be largely prevented by the HPV vaccine.
