What are Kegel Exercises?

It’s the exercise that strengthens the pelvic floor muscles. Your pelvic floor muscles run from the base of your spine (tailbone) to the front of your pelvis (pubic bone). These muscles help push blood into the penis and expel urine and semen from the urethra and penis. Kegel exercises also help direct blood flow to the penis for erection and squeeze urine and semen out.

Kegel exercises involve squeezing and releasing your pelvic floor muscles – the ones that help with urinate (pee), poop, and sex. By doing these exercises regularly, you can build stronger pelvic muscles, leading to better bladder control, bowel health, and even a boost to your sex life.

Why would Men do Kegel Exercises?

Regular Kegels offer a range of benefits for men, including:

  • Improved bladder control
  • Enhanced bowel health: Maintain control.
  • Blood flows in the penis so well it boosts sexual performances
  • Preparation for prostate cancer surgery.

How to do Kegel exercises?

First of all, locate your pelvic floor muscles by stopping urinating midway or spotting the muscle that keeps you from passing gas. The parts in action are your pelvic floor muscles.

How to do Kegel exercises:

  1. Start simple: Lie down comfortably and focus on tightening those muscles for 3 seconds, then relax for 3 seconds. Repeat 10 times.
  2. Progress gradually: As you get stronger, try Kegels while sitting, standing, or even walking.
  3. Focus matters: Only squeeze your pelvic floor muscles. Avoid tensing your abdomen, thighs, or buttocks. Breathe normally.
  4. Make it a habit: Aim for 3 sets of 10 repetitions daily. Consider incorporating them into your daily routine, like brushing your teeth, or urinating to get rid of the last few drops of urine.

Note: Learning to relax your pelvic floor muscles is important to avoid pain and to help with proper muscle functioning. Speak to your healthcare provider if you feel pain during a kegel session.

Is there Risks or Complications in Doing Kegel Exercises?

Kegel exercises shouldn't cause damages. However, learn to relax the muscles and don't overdo it. You also shouldn’t interrupt your urine flowtoo much.

When to Expect Results?

Be consistent. It should take about six weeks to notice improvements from Kegel exercises. Keep up the routine to continue reaping the benefits. By strengthening your pelvic floor, you can improve your bladder control, bowel health, and sexual function. If you do your Kegel exercises regularly, you can expect results such as reduced urine leakage. Don't hesitate to talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
