How to Reach Koh Samui

By Plane: Flying is the fastest and most convenient way to reach Koh Samui, especially if budget is not a concern. Koh Samui International Airport, located between Bophut and Chaweng, offers frequent flights from various locations in Thailand and international destinations.

By Bus, Ferry, or Taxi: For travellers on a budget, reaching Koh Samui via a combination of bus, ferry, and taxi is an affordable alternative. Regular ferries operate from the mainland, connecting Koh Samui with nearby islands like Koh Tao and Koh Phangan.

Budget-conscious adventurers can utilise public transportation for a cost-effective journey. For example, travelling from Railay Beach to Koh Samui might involve booking through a local tour operator. While the advertised journey time might be 6.5 hours with a mix of bus, ferry, and taxi, actual travel times and routes can vary. My personal experience involved 5 buses, a longtail boat, a ferry, and a taxi, stretching the trip to 12 hours!

Getting Around Koh Samui

Scooter Rentals: Renting a scooter is the best way to explore Koh Samui at your own pace. However, if you’re inexperienced or uncomfortable riding in traffic, proceed cautiously as the island's roads can be busy compared to smaller islands.

Public Transportation: The local Songthaew bus is a cost-effective option that loops along the main ring road. Simply wave it down, inform the driver of your destination, agree on the fare, and enjoy the ride. Keep in mind that this is shared transport, so expect multiple stops along the route.

Private Transportation: For more direct travel, private Songthaews, taxis, and motorcycle taxis are readily available. These options are ideal for shorter distances or when time is a priority.
