What is PrEP?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication that people at risk of HIV take to prevent getting the virus. When taken as prescribed, it can reduce the chances of getting HIV through sex or sharing needles.

If you believe you are at risk, PrEP may be a good option for you. Only you understand your sexual lifestyle!

Frequently Asked Questions About PrEP

Can I Use PrEP If My Partner is HIV Positive and I'm HIV Negative?

Yes, you can use PrEP to protect yourself from HIV if your partner is HIV positive and you're HIV negative. PrEP is highly recommended for added protection, especially if your partner is still infectious.

If your partner isn't on HIV treatment or has not reached an undetectable viral load, PrEP can reduce your risk of getting HIV by up to 99%.

If your partner is on effective HIV treatment and has an undetectable viral load, the risk of transmission is almost zero. In this case, you may not need PrEP, but it's best to consult with a healthcare provider to make the right choice.

Do I Still Need to Use Condoms If I Take PrEP?

Yes, it's strongly recommended to use condoms even if you're on PrEP. While PrEP is effective at preventing HIV, it doesn't protect against other STDs like syphilis, gonorrhea, or chlamydia.

Condoms help protect against these STDs. Using PrEP, condoms, and DOXYPEP (doxycycline for post-exposure prevention) together gives you the best protection for your sexual health.

How Long Does PrEP Take to Become Effective?

For daily PrEP to be effective, it needs to build up in your body, which takes about 7 days for anal sex. After that, you should take it once a day to keep it effective.

If you're using PrEP On Demand, it's important to follow the '2-1-1' dosage plan for it to work. PrEP On Demand is only effective for anal sex; for other activities, daily PrEP is needed for HIV protection.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of PrEP?

In the first few weeks of starting daily PrEP, some people may have headaches, dizziness, tiredness, or stomach issues like nausea, diarrhea, or cramps. These usually go away as your body gets used to the medication.

PrEP can affect kidney function in a small number of people, so kidney tests may be part of your check-ups. If you're worried about side effects or having any, talk to your doctor during your appointments.

What Should I Do If I Have Side Effects from PrEP?

Most people tolerate PrEP well, but some may have side effects as their body adjusts. If this happens, taking your dose before bedtime can help you sleep through the side effects. If the side effects are too much or last more than a month, contact your healthcare provider right away.

Does PrEP Have Long-Term Side Effects?

PrEP is not believed to have long-term side effects, but it's important to work with your doctor to watch for any issues. In rare cases, PrEP may affect kidney or liver function. Your doctor will do initial tests, and if needed, regular blood tests will be done to monitor your health.

I Take Medication for Other Conditions. Can I Still Use PrEP?

PrEP has been shown not to interact with most medications. However, it’s best to inform your doctor or pharmacist that you’re taking PrEP before being prescribed other medications.

I Drink Alcohol and/or Use Recreational Drugs. Can I Still Use PrEP?

Studies show that PrEP doesn't interact with alcohol or recreational drugs. However, using them may cause you to forget your doses, which can reduce how well the treatment works.

How Do I Maintain My Adherence?

PrEP should be taken at the same time every day to keep a steady level in your body. Make it a habit by setting alarms or reminders, and carry a spare dose when you're away from home.

What Do I Do I Forget to Take My PrEP?

If you miss a daily PrEP dose, just take it at your usual time. Missing one dose won't significantly affect its effectiveness, and there's no need to take two doses to catch up. However, if you're using PrEP On Demand, it's very important not to miss any doses. Missing a dose can reduce its effectiveness.

I'm Going to Be Traveling. When Should I Take My Pills When I'm at My Destination?

PrEP can be taken at the same time as you would at home, regardless of the time zone difference.

Can I Take My Pills with Me When I'm Traveling?

You can bring PrEP with you when you travel. Keep it in its original, labeled container and carry a prescription or doctor’s letter in case customs asks. Make sure to bring enough for the whole trip, plus a few extra doses just in case of delays.

What Steps Do I Need to Take to Access PrEP?

Before you can obtain PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), you need to be assessed for suitability. This assessment involves a few simple steps at the clinic:

Step 1: Get Tested

Visit a sexual health clinic that prescribes PrEP for a blood test. The tests will screen for:

  • HIV
  • Liver function
  • Kidney function

You will receive your results online within one day.

Step 2: Discuss Your Results

Your doctor or counselor will review your test results with you to determine if you are eligible for PrEP.

Step 3: Receive Your Prescription

If you qualify for PrEP, you will receive a prescription. At PULSE CLINIC locations throughout Thailand, you can obtain up to 12 bottles of PrEP per visit.
