STD Testing in Phuket for 28 Infections: Rapid & Advanced PCR Panel

STD Testing in Phuket: Comprehensive PCR 28 Panel at PULSE Clinic

Written by Dr. Deyn Natthakhet Yaemim, Founding Director, PULSE Clinic, originally published 6 June 2015. Last updated 12 October 2026.

Looking after your sexual health starts with knowing your status. Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) cause no noticeable symptoms, so a person can carry and pass on an infection without realising it. Testing is the only reliable way to find out, and finding an infection early usually means simpler treatment and a lower risk of complications.

At PULSE Clinic, our doctors have supported patients with sexual health concerns for many years. Our PCR 28 Multiplex test screens for 28 organisms from a single sample, using the same nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) technology recommended by international guidelines for detecting chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

In this article, we explain how PCR testing works, which organisms the PCR 28 panel detects, which sample type suits your situation, what it costs in Phuket, and when to test. We also explain what the panel does not cover, such as HIV and hepatitis B and C, which need separate blood tests.

Your visit is private and confidential, and you are always welcome to ask our team any question without judgement.

What is PCR testing for STIs?

PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is a type of nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT). It looks for the genetic material of specific bacteria and viruses in a sample and copies it many times, so even a very small amount can be detected.

PCR is widely used to diagnose infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea, and international guidelines recognise it as a highly sensitive method. This means it can find an infection that older methods, or tests that look for antibodies, may miss.

Which samples can be used?

Depending on your situation, your sample may be:

  • Urine
  • A swab from the throat, vagina, cervix, rectum or a skin sore
  • A semen sample, where your doctor advises it

The right sample depends on the organism being investigated and where an infection may be. For example, a urine test cannot detect an infection that is only in the throat or rectum. Our doctors will help you choose the right site, based on the type of sexual contact you have had.

Can PCR results be positive after treatment?

Yes, this can happen. PCR can sometimes detect genetic material from organisms that are no longer alive. A positive result soon after treatment therefore does not always mean the infection is still active. Your doctor will explain your result in light of your symptoms and treatment history and will advise whether and when to repeat the test.

Why get tested if you have no symptoms?

Many people with STIs feel completely well. Infections affecting the throat, rectum, or genital tract may go unnoticed, depending on the organism and the site of infection.

Testing when you have no symptoms can help you:

  • Identify infections and access treatment when needed.
  • Reduce the risk of complications associated with untreated infections.
  • Inform partners when appropriate so they can seek testing and treatment.
  • Make informed decisions about sexual health and prevention.
  • Feel more confident about your next steps after a possible exposure.

The appropriate testing schedule depends on your circumstances. A healthcare professional can help you choose suitable tests and timing.

Which 28 infections does the PCR panel detect?

Comprehensive STD Detection with Our Advanced PCR Multiplex Test for 28 Infections. Our STD PCR Multiplex uses cutting-edge technology to detect multiple infections in a single test. It screens for 28 different infections in various body locations, including

We can detect these infections in the following areas:

  • Throat and oral cavity
  • Urethra (male & female)
  • Anorectal area
  • Vagina and cervix
  • Sperm
  • Skin lesions

What Test Is Right for You?

  • For urethra and urinary tract infections, opt for the Urine PCR for 28 infections.
  • To test for infections from oral sex, select the Throat Swab PCR for 28 infections.
  • If you engage in anal sex without a condom, choose the Anal Swab PCR for 28 infections.
  • For women engaging in vaginal sex, choose the Vaginal Swab PCR for 28 infections.

Important information about interpreting results

Some organisms that may be detected by multiplex panels, including Ureaplasma species, Mycoplasma hominis, certain Candida species and Gardnerella vaginalis, can be present without causing symptoms or requiring treatment.

A positive result does not automatically mean that medication is needed. Your doctor will interpret the result alongside your symptoms, medical history, and the relevant clinical guidance.

Please note: This list reflects the PCR 28 panel described in this article. The exact number of reportable targets and organisms included in each panel should be confirmed against the current laboratory specification.

The panel does not replace blood tests for HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C. Syphilis may also require blood testing, even if a molecular test is available for a particular specimen. Please tell our team if you would like a broader STI screening assessment.

Which sample should I choose?

The right sample depends on the type of sexual contact you have had, your symptoms, and the infection being investigated. Testing the right anatomical site matters because a urine sample may not detect an infection confined to the throat or rectum.

Type of contact or concernSample that may be appropriate
Urinary or urethral symptoms, or genital screeningUrine sample, where suitable for the test
Oral sex or possible throat exposureThroat swab
Anal sex or possible rectal exposureRectal swab
Vaginal exposure or symptomsVaginal or cervical swab, as appropriate
Visible sore or blisterLesion swab, if suitable for the suspected infection
Semen testing requested by a doctorSemen sample, if supported by the test

Not every panel can be used with every sample type. Please confirm that the selected PCR panel is validated for your intended specimen.

A throat swab may cause brief gagging, while a rectal swab may cause mild discomfort or pressure. Our trained staff can explain the collection process and help you feel comfortable.

How to give a urine sample

  1. Register at the clinic and receive your sample container and instructions.
  2. Follow the collection instructions provided by our staff.
  3. If instructed, collect the first part of your urine stream rather than a midstream sample.
  4. Secure the lid and place the container in the specimen bag.
  5. Return the sample to our staff and confirm your contact details.

For the urine PCR test described here, please avoid urinating for at least one hour before your appointment, unless your clinician or laboratory provides different instructions. Fasting is not normally required for this test.

How long do PCR results take?

Turnaround times depend on the selected panel, sample type, laboratory processing, and the service you choose.

For the PCR 28 service described above, standard results are listed as available within seven days, with three-day, next-day and same-day options subject to availability and additional fees.

For same-day results on the PCR 28 panel, the published instructions specify that the sample must be collected at the clinic before 12:30 p.m. Please confirm this cut-off with our team before your visit.

Results are sent to the email address you provide. You may also be able to access them through the PULSE Online Portal (POP) and the E-Doc mobile app, subject to the current service arrangements.

When should I get tested after exposure?

Every infection has a window period: the time between exposure and when a particular test can reliably detect the infection. Testing too early may produce a negative result even if an infection is present.

The appropriate timing depends on the organism, the type of test and the sample collected.

  • Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: NAAT or PCR testing is commonly recommended around 14 days after exposure when screening for an asymptomatic infection. Your clinician may advise earlier assessment or repeat testing depending on your circumstances.
  • Other organisms tested by PCR: Detection timing varies by organism and assay. Do not assume that one window period applies to every organism in a multiplex panel.
  • HIV: The window period depends on the test used. A laboratory fourth-generation antigen/antibody test and an antibody-only test may detect infection at different times.
  • Syphilis and hepatitis B and C: Blood-test timing varies by infection and test type. Follow your clinician's advice about the initial test and whether repeat testing is needed.

If you have symptoms, a known exposure or a partner who has been diagnosed with an STI, seek medical advice rather than waiting for a particular window period to pass. A clinician can help you decide whether to test now and when to repeat a test if necessary.

If a possible HIV exposure occurred within the past 72 hours, seek urgent medical assessment for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). PEP should be started as soon as possible when indicated.

How often should I be tested?

There is no single testing schedule that suits everyone. The right frequency depends on your sexual activity, number of partners, types of exposure, prevention methods and previous results.

General considerations include:

  • Routine screening: Consider regular STI screening if you are sexually active, particularly when you have new partners or have not been tested recently.
  • Every 3–6 months: More frequent screening may be appropriate for people with ongoing exposure risks, including some gay and bisexual men and people with multiple partners.
  • After a possible exposure: Ask a healthcare professional when to test and whether repeat testing is necessary.
  • When symptoms develop: Arrange an assessment promptly rather than waiting for your next routine screen.
  • After a partner's diagnosis: Seek advice about the appropriate tests, treatment and timing.

Screening recommendations also differ by age, pregnancy status, anatomical site and local clinical guidance. People who may benefit from screening for specific infections should discuss a personalised schedule with their healthcare professional.

What happens if my result is positive?

A positive result does not mean that you have to manage everything alone. Many bacterial STIs are curable with appropriate treatment, while other infections can be managed with medical care.

Your doctor will explain what the result means, whether treatment is recommended and whether additional testing is needed. You may also receive advice about notifying partners, avoiding transmission and arranging follow-up testing.

Some organisms detected by multiplex panels can be present without causing disease. This is why the result needs to be interpreted in context rather than assuming that every positive finding requires medication.

Your results and medical information are handled confidentially in accordance with applicable privacy requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment for an STD test in Phuket?

No, an appointment is not required, and walk-ins are welcome at our Phuket branches. You can also book online or contact our team beforehand to confirm the test, sample collection, and your preferred time.

How should I prepare for PCR testing?

You do not need to fast. For a urine sample, please avoid urinating for at least one hour beforehand. For a semen sample, please avoid ejaculation for 2 to 3 days. Our staff will give you clear instructions on the day.

How soon after unprotected sex can I get tested?

For chlamydia and gonorrhoea PCR, we recommend testing at least 14 days after exposure. Other infections have different window periods. For example, the HIV 4th generation test gives a conclusive result at about 45 days, and syphilis and hepatitis blood tests may need up to 3 months. If you have symptoms or a known exposure, please seek medical advice promptly and do not wait.

Does the PCR 28 test include HIV or hepatitis?

No. HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C are diagnosed with separate blood tests. The PCR 28 panel does detect the syphilis bacterium, but it is most useful on a swab from a sore, and blood tests remain the standard way to screen for syphilis. Our team can arrange the right combination of tests at one visit.

Is a urine PCR test as accurate as a swab?

For infections of the urethra, urine PCR is highly accurate when the sample is collected correctly. However, a urine test cannot reliably rule out infections in other places. A throat or rectal swab may be needed, depending on the type of sexual contact you have had.

How long do PCR results take?

Standard results are ready in 7 days. You can choose 3-day, next-day, or same-day results for an additional fee. Same-day results need the sample to be taken at the clinic before noon. Results are sent to your email and can be viewed on the PULSE Online Portal and the E-Doc app.

Is my result confidential?

Yes. Your results are shared only with you, through the email address you provide and our secure online portal. Please ask our team if you would like to know how your results will be delivered.
