Why Get Tested for Other STIs Along With HIV?

It is standard practice to test for syphilis alongside HIV, as both can be detected through blood samples. Syphilis, in particular, is known to cause sores and blisters, increasing vulnerability to other STIs.

Doctors often advise testing for HIV together with other STIs, particularly syphilis. Certain STIs can lead to sores or blisters in areas involved in sexual activity, which may facilitate HIV transmission. Understanding your STI status not only ensures appropriate treatment but also helps you evaluate your risk of contracting or spreading HIV more effectively.

What is a Rapid HIV Blood Test?

A rapid HIV blood test is a quick and efficient method to detect HIV infection by analyzing a small blood sample. These tests are designed to deliver accurate results within minutes, making them an ideal option for those seeking fast and confidential HIV testing.

PULSE CLINICS offers two reliable options for rapid HIV testing:

OPTION 1: HIV Combo The rapid HIV test at PULSE Clinic is a combination antigen and antibody 4th generation finger prick blood test. The test is simple and quick, giving accurate results in only 20 minutes. Our rapid combo test detects more acute HIV infections than that of previous 2nd & 3rd generation tests available. This new rapid blood test identifies HIV-positive patients earlier within a smaller window period, helping to prevent further transmission during this extremely infectious early stage. This HIV test can be taken from 2 weeks after exposure to the HIV virus and is taken in a completely confidential and discrete environment at all our branches throughout Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Singapore, Hong KongPhilippines and Malaysia.

OPTION 2: 3rg generation Rapid HIV Test This Rapid HIV test at PULSE clinic is a HIV antibody tests (also called third generation tests). An HIV antibody test looks for these antibodies in your blood, oral fluid or urine. If these antibodies are found, it means that your body is reacting to an HIV infection and that you have HIV. 3rd generation antibody tests have a window period of approximately three to four weeks.

How Does a Rapid HIV Test Work?

With our sterile finger-prick technique, we collect a tiny blood sample to perform the rapid HIV test. Using a quick and painless procedure, a small drop of blood is placed onto a portable testing strip, delivering accurate results in just 20 minutes. This convenient method ensures a fast, confidential, and reliable HIV test at all PULSE CLINICS locations.

What Should I Do After My HIV Test Results Come Out?

What Should I Do If My Result Was Positive (Detected HIV Infection)What Should I Do If My Result Was Negative (Does Not Detect HIV Infection)
  • There is a high chance that you have an HIV infection.
  • You may need another PCR RNA test to confirm the diagnosis.
  • Your doctor may recommend starting HIV treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART) immediately to improve your chances of recovering faster.
  • Being HIV-positive is not the end! With proper treatment, you can live a long, healthy, and happy life once you become undetectable (U=U).
  • You might not have HIV!
  • The chance of receiving a false negative result is quite low. A false negative typically occurs only under specific conditions, such as getting tested during the window period.
  • If you are not already on PrEP, consider taking additional safety precautions to further reduce your risk of HIV.
  • If you are already on PrEP, keep up your habits! Remember that routine blood tests are a crucial part of your PrEP regimen!

When Should You Test for HIV?

I HAVE LOW RISK: Get tested once a year
I HAVE HIGH RISK:Get tested every 3 months, and consider taking
PrEP.
I MIGHT BE EXPOSED TO HIV: HIV screening is all about timing. The right test at the right time means accuracy.

  • If your exposure was less than 3 days ago, see our doctor at the clinic ASAP to immediately discuss if you need an emergency pill or HIV PEP.
  • If your exposure was 7-10 days ago, you should do the HIV RNA PCR. Results normally take 7 working days.
  • If your exposure was 14-16 days ago, you should do the HIV Combo test. Results normally take 20 minutes.
  • If your exposure was at least 22-28 days ago, you should do the HIV Antibody test. This test can be easily done at the clinic, it takes 20 minutes.

If you experience symptoms like fever, muscle aches, rashes, sore throat, or enlarged lymph nodes, it's important to consider an HIV test. However, keep in mind that not everyone with HIV shows these signs. If you believe you may have been exposed to HIV or are at risk, it's crucial to get tested, even if you don't have symptoms. Early detection is key to managing and preventing further transmission of the virus.

You might be at higher risk of HIV while in Thailand, especially if you don't have a proper protection. Getting tested is key in taking care of yourself for HIV. The only way you can be sure you have them is to get it tested, because HIV are usually asymptomatic. Having no symptoms doesn't mean no HIV. Getting treated early also means less chance of HIV developing into AIDS, which can cause long term health issues. Get tested and treated at PULSE Clinic today!

Is It Safe to Get Tested at PULSE CLINICS?

Absolutely! At PULSE CLINICS, we use clean, sterile, and single-use instruments for every test. As part of a growing trend in healthcare, we prioritize disposable instruments like cotton, alcohol pads, needles, and gloves to ensure the highest level of safety. This practice is followed at all our branches in Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia.

If you're concerned about the risk of infection from testing, rest assured that we take every precaution to protect you, not expose you. We understand that some people may have excessive worries about infection. If you feel these concerns are overwhelming, we can recommend compassionate mental health professionals who offer private, non-judgmental support.

HIV Test Accuracy and Window Period

The HIV window period is the time between potential HIV exposure and when a test can provide an accurate result. During this time, the body begins to produce an immune response to the virus, specifically HIV antibodies. An HIV test detects these antibodies, indicating the presence of an infection. Understanding the window period is essential for ensuring accurate testing and early detection of HIV.

The Importance of HIV Window Periods

Different HIV tests have different HIV window periods, as different tests detect different indicators of HIV infection during the HIV development cycle.

As HIV develops in the human body, HIV antibodies and antigens (protein) will develop too. Different HIV tests thus detect different antibodies at different stages.

When a wrong HIV screening is done during the window period, a person can be infected with HIV but the test results may still show negative. This is called a false negative HIV screening result.

Should I Also Test for Other STDs?

If you have been at risk of HIV exposure then it is very likely that you have been exposed to other STDs. Because of this, we highly recommend that you also screen for other STDs such as Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Hepatitis, Herpes and Warts.

You might also want to consider some preventive methods to help reduce the risk of STD transmission, especially in people who already have a history of having an infection. For example, HIV PrEP is a highly effective method in HIV prevention, DoxyPEP for bacterial STI, or getting HPV vaccines for 100% protection against 9 dangerous strains of HPV.

Too Worried to Wait?

The fastest way to find out if you have been infected with HIV or not is to do the HIV PCR TEST 7-10 days after the potential exposure. The next earliest accurate test is the HIV Ag/Ab Combo test at 15-17 days post-exposure.
All other HIV tests are subject to a 3 months window period. In other words, you have to wait for 3 months before knowing for sure if you have been infected with HIV or not. You can potentially spread it to your sexual partners during this time without even realizing it.
If you took HIV PEP before it is recommended that you consider taking HIV PrEP after that for prevention.
