What is Vaxigrip Tetra?

Sanofi Pasteur developed Vaxigrip Tetra, an inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine. It protects against four influenza virus strains: two influenza A strains (H1N1 and H3N2) and two influenza B strains (Victoria and Yamagata). The vaccine is administered via intramuscular injection and is suitable for individuals six months of age and older.

Composition and Mechanism of Action

The effectiveness of Vaxigrip Tetra stems from its carefully selected components. The vaccine contains purified, inactivated influenza viruses that cannot cause infection. Instead, when administered, the vaccine stimulates the body's immune system to produce antibodies against the influenza viruses present in the vaccine.

Upon vaccination, the immune system recognizes these viral components as foreign invaders and mounts a defence by producing antibodies specific to the strains included in the vaccine. These antibodies serve as a shield against subsequent exposure to the actual influenza viruses, preventing infection or reducing its severity if infection does occur.

Importance of Quadrivalent Protection

One distinguishing feature of Vaxigrip Tetra is its quadrivalent formulation. Traditional trivalent influenza vaccines protect against two influenza A strains and one influenza B strain. However, influenza B viruses can further be classified into two lineages: Victoria and Yamagata. Including both lineages in the vaccine increases its efficacy by offering broader protection against circulating influenza B viruses.

By covering all four influenza strains (two A strains and two B strains), Vaxigrip Tetra provides comprehensive coverage against a wider range of influenza viruses, reducing the risk of infection and its associated complications.

Safety and Efficacy

Extensive clinical trials and post-marketing surveillance have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of Vaxigrip Tetra. Like all vaccines, mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site, low-grade fever, and muscle aches may occur, but these are generally transient and resolve without complications.

The efficacy of Vaxigrip Tetra may vary from season to season depending on the match between the vaccine strains and the circulating influenza viruses. However, even in seasons where the game is suboptimal, vaccination can still provide partial protection and reduce the severity of illness.
