How is Gonorrhea Treated?

Gonorrhea is treated with the antibiotic ceftriaxone, given as an injection, due to the rise of drug-resistant strains. After treatment, avoid sexual activity for seven days to prevent spreading the infection. We recommended retesting for gonorrhea three months after treatment to ensure no reinfection, which can occur if sexual partners aren't treated.

Partners from the past 60 days should also be tested and treated, even if asymptomatic. Wait at least seven days after a partner's treatment before resuming sexual activity to prevent reinfection.

How Is Gonorrhea Transmitted and How Easy Was It Get Through Sex?

Gonorrhea is primarily transmitted through vaginal, oral, or anal sexual contact. Having sex with people tested positive for gonorrhea has a really high chance of getting infected.

Engaging in unprotected vaginal intercourse with an infected woman carries about a 20% risk of transmission to a man. The risk of transmission from an infected man to a woman or between men during sexual activity is likely even higher. Practicing safe sex and using protection can significantly reduce the risk of spreading gonorrhea.

How Can I Know If I Have Gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea often shows no noticeable symptoms in most people. You can still pass chlamydia to your sexual partner despite being asymptomatic. This is why getting tested for Gonorrhea is important, because it's the only way you can be sure if you have gonorrhea.

All PULSE Clinics in Thailand provide the most comprehensive PCR Tests for 28 infections to give you peace of mind and fast treatment

Did You Know the MenB Vaccine Also Reduces the Risk of Gonorrhea?

The MenB vaccine not only defends against deadly meningococcal disease but also offers additional protection against gonorrhea. With rising concerns over antibiotic resistance, this cross-protection is an unexpected public health win.

Whether you're a parent, traveler, or adult seeking preventive care, the MenB vaccine is a smart and effective health investment. In Thailand, it’s easy to access through private providers—just be sure to complete the full dose schedule and consult your doctor.

What preparations are needed before testing?

You won't need to fast or avoid any specific kind of food before STD testing. However, we suggested you wait until after the window period of the STD for the most accurate result. You might also need stop having sex during this period, as you might have some risks of passing the infection to your sexual partners.

Is gonorrhea curable?

Gonorrhea is curable. It can be effectively treated with antibiotics. Treatment typically involves either a single dose or a course of tablets taken over 7 to 14 days. However, it's becoming more difficult to effectively cure gonorrhea as there are types of gonorrhea that develops high resistance to antibiotics. This makes testing and preventing honorrhea is idea

How can I prevent gonorrhea?

The most reliable way to prevent chlamydia is to abstain from sexual activity. However, if you are sexually active, there are effective steps you can take to significantly reduce your risk:

  1. Use Condoms Consistently: Proper condom use during sexual activity provides a strong barrier against chlamydia and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
  2. Get Regular Screenings: Routine STI testing is essential, especially if you have multiple partners or are in a new relationship. Early detection can prevent complications and reduce the spread of infections.
  3. Consider Doxycycline for DoxyPEP: Taking doxycycline as post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) may help lower the risk of contracting gonorrhea, particularly for those at higher risk.

By following these preventive measures, you can maintain better sexual health and significantly reduce the likelihood of chlamydia transmission.

Why does it looks like DoxyPEP is less effective on gonorrhea?

DoxyPEP uses doxycycline, which is a type of antibiotic that kills the bacteria causing the infection. DoxyPEP might bee less effective against some strains of gonorrhea that develop drug resistance. These drug-resistant strains of gonorrhea are also more common compared to other STIs, making it appear that DoxyPEP is less effective for gonorrhea prevention.
