What's New

Sexually transmitted infections are a very frequent and under-diagnosed cause of illness worldwide. A high number of detection methods and a large range of specimens in which sexually transmitted infections can be determined are available at the moment. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) can be performed on first void urine, throat swab, vaginal and cervical swab, anal swab offer the advantage of being painless non-invasive, self-collectable and high sensitivity and specificity.

Most of the time, people with sexually transmitted infections do not have any symptoms, this is called asymptomatic infection which means the person carries infections without having any symptom but is able to pass it on to their partners through kissing and/or oral sex.

Asymptomatic STD testing, getting tested even though you don't have any symptom, is a good idea to make sure you DO NOT have any infections hidden in your throat, vaginal canal and cervix, urethra and urine as well as anal canal. And if the test detects DNA of any bacterial or viral STIs, it will be a good chance for you to start treatment in time and tell your partner to get treatment as well to prevent transmission to other people in the community. This is a very helpful way to reduce STI transmission in the community.

Nucleic-acid amplification tests, also known as NATs or NAATs, are used to identify small amounts of DNA or RNA in test samples. They can, therefore, be used to identify bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens even when the material of interest is present in very small amounts. When it comes to STD testing, there are NAAT tests available that can detect a variety of different STDs. In fact, most urine tests for STDs are performed using nucleic-acid amplification tests.

What Are the Urine PCR and Swab PCR Tests?

PCR, or Polymerase Chain Reaction, also known as Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT), is a cutting-edge molecular technique used to detect specific pathogens (viruses or bacteria) in blood, body fluids, or other tissues. This method identifies the DNA of viruses and bacteria.

Why Choose PCR Testing?

  • Recommended for: Testing for infections such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Ureaplasma, Mycoplasma, and Trichomonas.
  • High Accuracy: PCR testing boasts a specificity greater than 99.5%, along with higher sensitivity and accuracy compared to traditional culture methods.
  • Painless and Convenient: In both men and women, Urine PCR (you simply need to provide a urine sample) and Genital PCR are significantly more sensitive than culture tests.
  • Comprehensive Detection: PCR can detect infections regardless of whether the organism is alive or dead.

This advanced testing technique is commonly utilized in developed countries and medical institutions, providing reliable results for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Which Body Parts Can Be Tested for Asymptomatic Infections with a DNA PCR Test?

Let's think about how we use our part of body to give ourselves (and our partners) pleasure.

THROAT SWAB

Imagine we kiss and suck and all the oral sex we use our mouth (and tongue and throat) the infections can be localized on your tonsil glands.
So for this area we perform a swab, gently rubbing the swab (or small cotton bud) on the back of the throat, on the tonsils, and in any other area where there might be redness, inflammation or pus. Throat swab can detect 28 infections mentioned above. There are no risks or complications associated with a throat swab culture. The test may cause momentary gagging because the back of the throat is a sensitive area, but it shouldn’t be painful.

ANAL SWAB

Doesn't matter if you are a man, a girl or a transwoman, if you like it from the back or using your backdoor for some fun the infections from your partners (or toys, hands, or gloves when fisting) can localize on the surface of anal canal or rectal tissue surface. Don't be too embarrassed to discuss your anal sex and safe anal sex practices with your doctor (We've seen many holes before and you won't be the last). To collect the specimen, a small cotton swab (you wish it is bigger) is placed into the anal canal and the rectum. The swab is rotated gently, removed and put in a container to be sent to our lab. There may be pressure as the swab is inserted into the rectum. The test shouldn't cause you any pain, we are always gentle and handle with care.

VAGINAL SWAB

We're talking about woman and transwoman, vaginal canal can be a house to host STI party and a matter of fact, STIs amongst transwoman do not differ from the non-TG population unless there are other risks factors involved. To collect the specimen, a small cotton swab is placed into the vaginal canal. The swab is rotated gently, removed and put in a container to be sent to our lab.

Where to Get an STD Test?

You can receive comprehensive STD testing and other sexual health services at any PULSE Clinic branch, both in Thailand and internationally. For added convenience, contact us for more information about our home test service or hotel visits, where our qualified doctors can come directly to you.

How Soon After Unprotected Can I Test for STD?

You should wait a minimum of 14 days before getting tested for chlamydia or gonorrhea. For HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, it’s recommended to wait at least 28 days before testing.

How Often Should I Test for STIs?

Annual tests for STDs are recommended if you are sexually active. Here are some situations where you may benefit from annual STD testing:

  • You are between the ages of 13 and 65 and engage in sexual activity.
  • You have never undergone an STD test before.
  • You are in a committed, monogamous relationship.
  • You practice safe sex consistently.

Regular testing is crucial for maintaining your sexual health and preventing the spread of infections. The best way to protect yourself and your partners is by staying proactive with your STD testing.

While annual testing is important, it may not be sufficient for everyone. The CDC recommends interval testing, which involves testing every 3-6 months if you:

  • Are a sexually active gay man
  • Are bisexual
  • Have multiple sexual partners
  • Have anonymous sexual partners
  • Practice unsafe sex

Note: These are general guidelines. One of our compassionate healthcare providers can help you determine the specifics of interval testing based on your unique circumstances.
