Routine screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is a cornerstone of proactive sexual healthcare. Because a significant number of STIs progress without presenting any visible symptoms, comprehensive testing remains the only definitive method to ensure an accurate diagnosis and timely clinical intervention.
At PULSE Clinic, we utilise advanced diagnostic technology through our PCR 28 Multiplex panel, allowing for the precise screening of 28 distinct pathogens from a single, non-invasive sample. This medical guide outlines the clinical mechanics of PCR testing, the specific organisms detected by the panel, appropriate sampling methods, a transparent pricing structure, and recommended testing windows.
Our goal is to equip patients with evidence-based, practical health information within a strictly confidential and supportive environment.
PCR stands for polymerase chain reaction. It is a type of nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) that detects genetic material from specific organisms in a sample.
PCR testing is widely used to detect infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Depending on the assay, it can identify an organism even when the amount of genetic material in the sample is relatively small.
Samples may include urine or swabs from the throat, vagina, cervix, rectum or a skin lesion. The appropriate sample depends on the organism being investigated and the site of possible infection.
PCR tests can sometimes detect genetic material from organisms that are no longer viable. For this reason, a positive result shortly after treatment does not always indicate an ongoing active infection. Your doctor can explain the result in the context of your treatment history and symptoms.

Many people with STIs feel completely well. Infections affecting the throat, rectum, or genital tract may go unnoticed, depending on the organism and the site of infection.
Testing when you have no symptoms can help you:
The appropriate testing schedule depends on your circumstances. A healthcare professional can help you choose suitable tests and timing.
Comprehensive STD Detection with Our Advanced PCR Multiplex Test for 28 Infections. Our STD PCR Multiplex uses cutting-edge technology to detect multiple infections in a single test. It screens for 28 different infections in various body locations, including
Some organisms that may be detected by multiplex panels, including Ureaplasma species, Mycoplasma hominis, certain Candida species and Gardnerella vaginalis, can be present without causing symptoms or requiring treatment.
A positive result does not automatically mean that medication is needed. Your doctor will interpret the result alongside your symptoms, medical history, and the relevant clinical guidance.
Please note: This list reflects the PCR 28 panel described in this article. The exact number of reportable targets and organisms included in each panel should be confirmed against the current laboratory specification.
The panel does not replace blood tests for HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C. Syphilis may also require blood testing, even if a molecular test is available for a particular specimen. Please tell our team if you would like a broader STI screening assessment.
The right sample depends on the type of sexual contact you have had, your symptoms, and the infection being investigated. Testing the right anatomical site matters because a urine sample may not detect an infection confined to the throat or rectum.
| Type of contact or concern | Sample that may be appropriate |
| Urinary or urethral symptoms, or genital screening | Urine sample, where suitable for the test |
| Oral sex or possible throat exposure | Throat swab |
| Anal sex or possible rectal exposure | Rectal swab |
| Vaginal exposure or symptoms | Vaginal or cervical swab, as appropriate |
| Visible sore or blister | Lesion swab, if suitable for the suspected infection |
| Semen testing requested by a doctor | Semen sample, if supported by the test |
Not every panel can be used with every sample type. Please confirm that the selected PCR panel is validated for your intended specimen.
A throat swab may cause brief gagging, while a rectal swab may cause mild discomfort or pressure. Our trained staff can explain the collection process and help you feel comfortable.
For the urine PCR test described here, please avoid urinating for at least one hour before your appointment, unless your clinician or laboratory provides different instructions. Fasting is not normally required for this test.
Turnaround times depend on the selected panel, sample type, laboratory processing, and the service you choose.
For the PCR 28 service described above, standard results are listed as available within seven days, with three-day, next-day and same-day options subject to availability and additional fees.
For same-day results on the PCR 28 panel, the published instructions specify that the sample must be collected at the clinic before 12:30 p.m. Please confirm this cut-off with our team before your visit.
Results are sent to the email address you provide. You may also be able to access them through the PULSE Online Portal (POP) and the E-Doc mobile app, subject to the current service arrangements.
Every infection has a window period: the time between exposure and when a particular test can reliably detect the infection. Testing too early may produce a negative result even if an infection is present.
The appropriate timing depends on the organism, the type of test and the sample collected.
If you have symptoms, a known exposure or a partner who has been diagnosed with an STI, seek medical advice rather than waiting for a particular window period to pass. A clinician can help you decide whether to test now and when to repeat a test if necessary.
If a possible HIV exposure occurred within the past 72 hours, seek urgent medical assessment for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). PEP should be started as soon as possible when indicated.
There is no single testing schedule that suits everyone. The right frequency depends on your sexual activity, number of partners, types of exposure, prevention methods and previous results.
General considerations include:
Screening recommendations also differ by age, pregnancy status, anatomical site and local clinical guidance. People who may benefit from screening for specific infections should discuss a personalised schedule with their healthcare professional.
A positive result does not mean that you have to manage everything alone. Many bacterial STIs are curable with appropriate treatment, while other infections can be managed with medical care.
Your doctor will explain what the result means, whether treatment is recommended and whether additional testing is needed. You may also receive advice about notifying partners, avoiding transmission and arranging follow-up testing.
Some organisms detected by multiplex panels can be present without causing disease. This is why the result needs to be interpreted in context rather than assuming that every positive finding requires medication.
Your results and medical information are handled confidentially in accordance with applicable privacy requirements.

Not at all! Walk-ins are always welcome at all PULSE Clinic locations across Thailand. However, if you prefer a quick, seamless visit with minimal waiting time, you can easily book online or message our team in advance to reserve your preferred time slot.
Fasting is not required, so you can eat and drink normally before coming in. For urine samples, please avoid urinating for at least 1 hour prior to your test. For semen samples, please refrain from ejaculation or any sexual activity for 2 to 7 days before providing your specimen. Swab samples don't require any special preparation, and our clinic staff will guide you through every step when you arrive.
The ideal timing depends on the specific infection you wish to screen for. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea PCR testing is commonly recommended around 14 days post-exposure for accurate asymptomatic screening. An HIV 4th generation test provides conclusive results around 45 days post-exposure, while blood tests for syphilis and viral hepatitis typically require up to 3 months for reliable detection. Please note that if you are currently experiencing symptoms or know you have been exposed, you should not wait out these window periods and should visit our doctors right away.
No, it does not. HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C require separate blood investigations. While the PCR 28 panel detects the syphilis bacterium (Treponema pallidum) from an open sore or swab, standard blood testing remains the most reliable method for syphilis screening. Our doctors can easily combine all necessary blood tests and PCR panels for you in a single visit.
Yes, for urogenital infections, a urine PCR test is exceptionally accurate when collected properly. However, urine cannot detect infections localised to other anatomical sites. Depending on the type of sexual contact you have had, our doctors may recommend a throat or rectal swab alongside urine collection to ensure complete, full-body protection.
Absolutely yes. Patient privacy is our highest priority. Your medical records and test results are strictly confidential, delivered safely to your designated email, and accessible anytime via the encrypted PULSE Online Portal (POP) or the E-Doc mobile app.
