Trade Name:
ATRIPLA®

Generic Name:

Efavirenz 600 mg + Emtricitabine 200 mg + Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg

Mechanism of Action:
The non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, efavirenz, and the two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (tenofovir DF), Both NNRTIs and NRTIs block an HIV enzyme called reverse transcriptase. By blocking reverse transcriptase, the drugs in ATRIPLA prevent HIV from multiplying and can reduce the amount of HIV in the body.

Indication:

For the treatment of HIV infection in adults and children who weigh at least 88 lb (40 kg). ATRIPLA can be used alone as a complete treatment regimen or with other HIV medicines.

Side effect:

• Rash. A rash can be serious. Contact your health care provider right away if you develop a rash.
• Serious mental health problems, including severe depression, suicidal thoughts, or delusions.
• Nervous system problems. These may become more severe if you drink alcohol or take mood-altering (street) drugs while taking ATRIPLA. Some nervous system symptoms may occur months to years after beginning treatment with efavirenz, a component of ATRIPLA.
New or worsening kidney problems, including kidney failure.
• Bone problems (bone pain, softening, or thinning [osteopenia]).
• Changes in your immune system (called immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome or IRIS). IRIS is a condition that sometimes occurs when the immune system begins to recover after treatment with an HIV medicine. As the immune system gets stronger, it may have an increased response to a previously hidden infection.
• Changes in body fat (lipodystrophy syndrome).

Drug Interaction:
This medication can harm your kidneys, especially if you also use certain medicines for infections, cancer, osteoporosis, organ transplant rejection, bowel disorders, or pain or arthritis (including aspirin, Tylenol, Advil, and Aleve).
