Sildenafil (Generic Sildenafil®)

Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra, which is FDA approved to treat ED. It improves blood flow to the penis by relaxing blood vessels and smooth muscle. The result is a harder and longer-lasting erection. We offer this popular ED treatment at a fraction of the brand name price.

What is Sildenafil?

Sildenafil (aka, sildenafil citrate) is proven to combat erectile dysfunction and help you get hard when the time is right. Sildenafil citrate is a well known PDE5 inhibitor that has been prescribed by doctors across the US for the last 20 years, ever since the FDA approved Viagra in 1998.

How Sildenafil Works

Sildenafil (generic for Sildenafil) works by promoting a balance of enzymes necessary to produce and maintain an erection. When aroused, the penis produces nitric oxide plus an enzyme that normally gets your penis hard. Like all PDE5 inhibitors, Sildenafil protects the enzyme from breaking down, which results in more blood flow in and less blood flow out. Sildenafil can last for 24-36 hours, so it can support erections longer than other ED pills.

Sildenafil Dosage

PULSE Clinic offers once-a-day Sildenafil in a 5mg dosage. Typically, this dosage of Sildenafil is taken once a day at the same time, no matter how often you have sex. After 4-5 days, the level of Sildenafil in your blood reaches a steady state that keeps your body ready for sex whenever the time is right. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you’ll be walking around with an erection - erections should still only occur in response to sexual arousal and stimulation. Sildenafil can be taken with or without food; it is not to be taken more than once every 24 hours. As always, read all safety and other information that comes with your prescription and only take Sildenafil as directed by your provider.

How long does it take for sildenafil to take effect?

Sildenafil typically starts working in about 15-30 minutes, but its peak effect begins for most men about one hour after it’s taken on an empty stomach. Keep in mind that food in the stomach can delay the absorption of sildenafil by up to an hour, and also that the timing of each individual’s response is a little bit different.
Remember that sildenafil will only work when you are sexually aroused, but it should make it easier to get and sustain an erection during sexual intercourse.

How to take Sildenafil

Sexy time is meant to be sexy. Take sildenafil exactly as your provider tells you. Typically sildenafil is recommended to be taken on an empty stomach about an hour before you plan to get busy, and you should be able to keep that erection strong for as long as it’s needed. Ain't no one have time for bad sexy time.

Sildenafil vs. Viagra

The main difference is branding and price. Viagra is a brand name medication invented by Pfizer, while sildenafil (or sildenafil citrate) is the active ingredient in Viagra that’s responsible for its positive effects on treating erectile dysfunction.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of sildenafil include headache, muscle aches, back pain, stuffy or runny nose, dizziness, facial flushing, rash, upset stomach or nausea, blurred vision or other visual changes and lowered blood pressure. If any of these effects do not go away over time or are particularly bothersome, talk to your healthcare provider.

Serious side effects of sildenafil include sudden loss of vision, hearing problems and priapism, which is an erection lasting longer than four hours. These side effects are rare, but require immediate medical attention.
If you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives or trouble breathing, seek emergency medical help.

How long does sildenafil last?

What are the side effects of sildenafil?

The most common side effects of sildenafil include headache, muscle aches, back pain, stuffy or runny nose, dizziness, facial flushing, rash, upset stomach or nausea, blurred vision or other visual changes and lowered blood pressure. If any of these effects do not go away over time or are particularly bothersome, talk to your healthcare provider.

If you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives or trouble breathing, seek emergency medical help.

Is Sildenafil safe?

Sildenafil has been shown to be safe for most men with erectile dysfunction. However, men with certain pre existing medical conditions may be at greater risk for specific adverse effects.
If you have (or have ever had) heart problems (such as a heart attack), heart disease, irregular heartbeat, angina, chest pain, narrowing of the aortic valve, heart failure, heart surgery, pulmonary hypertension including pulmonary arterial hypertension, stroke, low blood pressure, high blood pressure, a deformed penis shape (Peyronie’s Disease), priapism (an erection that lasts for more than 4 hours), sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, leukemia, retinitis pigmentosa (a rare genetic eye disease), severe vision loss (such as NAION), bleeding problems, stomach ulcers, liver problems or kidney problems (such as kidney dialysis), you may be at higher risk for adverse effects.
If you have any of these health conditions, or any other health condition, tell your healthcare provider. Your provider should be aware of all medical conditions, prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications that you are taking.

Can I take Sildenafil with other medications?

Sildenafil does have known drug interactions with some other prescription medications. Sildenafil interacts with nitrates (nitroglycerin), guanylate cyclase stimulators (riociguat), alpha-blockers, HIV protease inhibitors (ritonavir, indinavir sulfate, saquinavir, atazanavir sulfate), oral antifungal medicines (ketoconazole, itraconazole), antibiotics (clarithromycin, telithromycin, erythromycin) and other high blood pressure drugs.
Be sure to avoid taking sildenafil at the same time as any nitrate medications (eg, nitroglycerin, isosorbide, etc) or other PDE5 inhibitors, including Revatio®, Cialis® (tadalafil), Levitra® (vardenafil) and Stendra® (avanafil).
Better yet, give your provider a list of all medications you are taking to get professional medical advice.
