Pelvic Inflammatory Disease - What You Need to Know

PID is an infection in women's reproductive organs, including the fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, and uterus. It can cause many problems.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease - What You Need to Know

What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a reproductive organ infection in females. The pelvis, situated in the lower abdomen, encompasses the fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, and uterus.

PID can be triggered by different types of bacteria, including those responsible for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like mycoplasma genitalium, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. What usually happens is that bacteria will first enter the vagina and cause an infection. When time passes, the infection will move into the pelvic organs.

This disease can escalate into a severe and potentially life-threatening condition if PID spreads to the bloodstream.

If you're feeling confused and unsure whether you have PID or not, you will need to consult a doctor. You can also talk to us here:

Risk Factors

If you have mycoplasma genitalium, gonorrhea, chlamydia, or any other STIs,  your risk of having PID will increase. However, you can also develop PID without having any STI at all.

Here are some more factors that can increase your risk:

  • Engaging in sexual activity before the age of 25
  • Having multiple sexual partners
  • Unprotected sexual intercourse
  • Recent insertion of an intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Douching
  • Previous history of pelvic inflammatory disease

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) Common Signs & Symptoms

Symptoms of PID may not be present for some women, but for those who do have symptoms, they may include:

  • Lower abdominal pain (most frequently reported)
  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Discomfort during sexual intercourse
  • Painful urination
  • Irregular bleeding
  • Heightened or malodorous vaginal discharge
  • Fatigue

There are some more severe symptoms, such as:

  • Intense abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Fainting
  • High fever

If you are experiencing severe symptoms, see a doctor or go to the emergency room (ER) immediately. This might be a sign that the infection has already spread to your bloodstream or other parts of your body.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) Treatment

Your doctor can usually diagnose PID after hearing your symptoms, but in most cases, your doctor will run tests to confirm whether you have PID. When the infection is positive, your doctor will run more tests and check the damage done to your pelvic area. PID can result in scarring of the fallopian tubes and permanent harm to the reproductive organs.

For treatment, your doctor will most likely prescribe antibiotics to kill the bacteria that caused your infection. Even though you've only taken antibiotics for a few days and the symptoms are disappearing, you should still finish the prescribed antibiotics, as stopping early might cause the infection to return.

Surgeries are also possible. This happens rarely and only if a pelvic abscess breaks open, if your doctor thinks it might, or if your infection isn't responding well to treatment.

The bacteria causing PID can also spread through sexual intercourse. Men can be silent carriers of bacteria that cause this disease. If you are sexually active, your partner should also get treated, as your infection can come back if your partner isn't treated. You will need to avoid sex during your treatment.

Preventing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

You can decrease your risk of PID by:

  • Use protection during sex
  • Undergoing STI screenings
  • Refraining from douching
  • Wiping from front to back after using the bathroom can help prevent bacteria from entering the vagina

PID long-term prognosis

If Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is left untreated, your symptoms can get worse and become problems such as:

  • Infertility – an inability to conceive children
  • Ectopic pregnancy – a pregnancy that happens outside of the uterus
  • Chronic pelvic pain – lower abdominal pain resulting from scarring of the fallopian tubes and other pelvic organs

As mentioned above, this infection can also spread to your bloodstream or other parts of your body and can cause a life-threatening problem.
