Nevirapine 200 mg

Mechanism of Action: 
NNRTIs bind noncompetitively to an active site of the reverse transcriptase molecule. Reverse transcriptase directs the polymerization of DNA from viral RNA. NNRTIs inhibit this polymerization by altering the position of critical amino acids within the catalytic site.

Indication: 
Indicated in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection in adults and pediatric patients 15 days and older. (First 14 days 200 mg once daily, After 14 days 200 mg twice daily)

Side effect:
• The most commonly reported side effects were rash, allergic reactions, nausea, abnormal liver function tests, headache, fatigue, somnolence, hepatitis, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, pyrexia, and myalgia.
• The uncommon side effects were toxic epidermal necrolysis, urticaria, and angioedema.

Drug Interaction:
Nevirapine can speed up the removal of many other medications from your body, which may affect how they work. Examples of affected  drugs include antiarrhythmics (such as amiodarone), asunaprevir, cobicistat, elvitegravir, some drugs used to treat seizures (such as clonazepam), azole antifungals (such as itraconazole, ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (such as clarithromycin), methadone, telaprevir, among others.

 

Pregnancy:
• Nevirapine has been widely used in pregnancy
• Likely safe for women to use while breastfeeding.
